When Olympians Fail

To move past failures and learn from them, we need to create an environment where it is safe to feel pain and show emotion. The harder we try, the more difficult the task, the worse it feels to come up short. We need to create an environment within ourselves and as a team of compassion, which is at the heart of performance.

Performance, Failure, & Shame

The irony of failure and shame is that, as a culture, we don't want to discuss either. But, the reality is that when we try our best and fail, we feel shame; it's natural. Failing is something to be proud of because we are pushing our limits and growing. Google failure, and you will come across shame, and vice versa. The conclusion is that we need to change our relationship with shame.

If Time Isn’t Money, What Is It?

Time is the only commodity we have. We don’t know how much if it we will get, and eventually we will run out. So we have to ask the question, what should I get for my time. For clarity, this is the key to effective time management.

What Death Can Teach Us About Life

Are our opinions and beliefs about success well designed? Do we put the things that matter most first? End-of-life care or Palliative care scrutinizes this question. You may be asking yourself, why would death be in the inspiration section? For most people, death is when they ask the most meaningful question, and the truth is that we can’t get more time or do-overs. So when we think about death or examine it, we may find the answers that will inspire us to live a meaningful life. It is worth noting that the Bushido, the Samurai warrior's code, codifies this virtue, requiring the warrior to visualize his or her death to bring out the best in their life, let go of fear, and give all. The subject matter in these videos may appear intimidating, but if you choose to catch these videos, you will feel refreshed with a sense of inner peace and be inspired.

Reflektions

Did you know that “failing” is a built-in part of changing a behavior? Mental health providers can tell you - “failing,” also known as relapse, is part of a process that brings us closer and closer to real change. And the good news is that each relapse is usually shorter and shorter, which shows that we are actually taking in new lessons at every effort to change. (And people who spend some time preparing before they take the leap - working out likely potential issues, etc - learn even more each time.)

Believing that we are unable to change is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to getting there, as is believing that change requires continuous effort or willpower. Some people find this belief - that they are destined to fail - so overwhelming that they overprepare before starting, and others jump right in, without a plan that’s sustainable. Regardless, we often forget that change is uncomfortable, and even good, healthy changes require all of us to feel unsure for a while as we learn new patterns.
