Mindfulness & Managing Conflict

Relationships, whether at work, with friends, or your partner, can be challenging. Countless reasons can lead to conflict. Complicating matters is how our biology influences our reactions to miscommunication. We can't make you a great communicator overnight, but mindfulness is a place to start.

How To Deal With Adversity

There is no right or wrong way to deal with complex emotions. We all handle them differently. If you want to master communication and help people move through their feelings, you first need to understand yourself.

Brene Brown on Empathy

Have you ever made a mistake, and then, without asking, someone tells you not to worry about it? Or why it isn't as bad as it feels? In most cases, this type of feedback is well-intentioned but unsupportive. When we fail or make a mistake, we need a friend, someone to tell us that our feelings are valid, even if there are other ways to view the situation, and that all people make mistakes on their path towards growth.

Reflektions

One-to-one relationships actually reflect at least three different needs - one for each individual, and the needs of the relationship itself. Our expectations are also focused on three different priorities: what we think we need, what we think the other person wants, and how we think the relationship should work. All of these expectations, however, are influenced by what we’ve learned and experienced over time.

The big challenge, though, is recognizing that what we understand about relationships and our roles in them is shaded by our own default ways of interacting. Some people can’t rest until they feel heard and understood; other people hate to “add fuel to the fire” and tend to avoid conflict whenever possible. Both of these approaches are used to preserve the relationship, but they also tend to backfire when you are involved with someone who misunderstands your intention.

At heart, people want to feel understood. Understanding your own “hidden shoulds” allows you to get curious about other people’s reactions and learn more about our own assumptions.
